Prof. D.B.Z. Ntuli has made an outstanding contribution to the development of literature in African languages, particularly in his mother tongue, isiZulu. He was twenty one years old when he published his first book, a novel entitled UBheka. Thereafter he produced works in various genres – prose, poetry, essays and drama.

Deuteronomy Bhekinkosi (D.B.Z.) Ntuli was born at Gcotsheni, near Eshowe, on 8 May 1940. He was the last born of the seven children of Mellina (MaShezi) and Zebulon Ntuli. In his writings he uses the initial ‘Z’ to honour his father, Zebulon.
